"Live from the Democrat National Convention (July 26)"
By Roy Lisker

Here is a map of the "Security Zones" around the
Convention center in Boston. The "orange" area on the
map has been likened to an internment camp. I don't
know where the city of Boston is coming from to allow
this thing-its mayor is a Democrat, but of course the
governor is Republican, and the state capital is
Boston itself.

At some point I will head up to make an inspection
of this provocation, which it obviously is.

There was a rally yesterday on Boston Common, a
spectrum of radical groups from hard-core Trotskyists
to Quakers. Lots of literature of course. Several
groups had provided hundreds of picket signs with a
wide variety of slogans. I picked one which calls for
banning military recruiters from public schools and
opposition to the draft.

Around 1 o'clock along the line a group of about
half a dozen anti-abortion religious fundamentalists
claimed a place along the walkways. They'd come with
huge photographs of mangled fetuses, etc. For some
reason the place they chose to set up their display
was right next to the Sparticists! Within 10 minutes
they were being mobbed and screamed at by the members
of this vestige of the far-off Left. I along with
several others shouted "Free Speech! Free Speech!" for
all the good it did. There were no other incidents;
all of us were afraid the cops might use this sort of
thing to close down the rally. Memories of the 60's,
when groups like TAWF, the Sparticists and the
Progressive Labor wrecked one demonstration after
another.

That's when I chose to take my sign and wander
about the rest of Boston Common (No -one else was doing
this, imagination is in short supply at these things,
or, more accurately, conformity is just as strong
here as in the rest of the society)

At the entrance to the Park Street subway stop I
stopped to watch a song-and-dance show by a troupe
calling itself the "Missile Dick Chicks" ! Dressed in
garish flimsys heavy on stripes and red, white and
blue, a group of about 8 young women were dancing
about with plastic missiles sticking out from the
groin area, while a man disguised in a George Bush
mask cracked a Texas bull whip over their heads.
Outrageously funny, with words to match.

Then a reporter from a local TV station came over
to interview me. I was wearing my "Ferment" t-shirt,
a baseball cap from Vieques Island, and buttons
stating "No War" and "Vote for Nader".

She gave me a full interview, I gave her a copy of
Ferment, and signed a release form. Portions of it may
appear on some local TV station, I forgot to ask
which, but it may be the very good Cambridge Community
TV, which broadcasts Democracy Now and similar
programs.

More to come from the unfolding of the DNC
extravaganza...
